Description

The Uch-lûth (The Ox Clan) clan of Dunlendings worship the Ox Spirit of Munfaeril.

Enedwaith

The Uch-lûth encountered at Lhanuch in Enedwaith remain hostile to Saruman. The Lhanuch Uch-lûth are considered outliers by the clans of Dunland proper, however, named Algraig and not always on friendly terms with the southern clans. [1] They are also wary of strangers, and though their goals these days lead them to ally with the Grey Company, the Rangers have been unwelcome in Glynn Brenin's halls for several years after an incident in Nan Laeglin. [2]

The Ox-clan in Enedwaith are led by Glynn Brenin. They had neighbours of the Turch-lûth once, but they were destroyed by the Draig-lûth who roam to the east of Lhanuch, in Thrór's Coomb. [1]

Raiglud, the eldest person in Lhanuch, still recalls the days when her Uch-lûth made their home in Dunland. Most of the clan then was destroyed by an orc-raid while the warriors were away on a hunt. [3]

Dunland

The Uch-lûth who remain in southern Dunland are (mostly) loyal to Saruman. Those in Upper Barnavon in the hills of Carreglyn are led by Madin Brenin and have allied with Saruman[4]. They do not treat the Turch-lûth in the lower village - (the few who remain after defying Saruman were given refuge by Madin's grandfather), pressing them to work the mines of Carreglyn to arm Saruman's forces [5]. They are known to be merchants more than warriors, but they are among those who have been rallied to Saruman's banner. [6]

Some of the Uch-lûth of Dunland can also be found in Galtrev, where most of the clans of Dunland have some presence. These Uch-lûth are in the upper village, benefiting from their loyalty to the White Wizard. [7]

The camp of Rhuvel-cadlus in the Gravenwood is also filled with Ox-clan loyal to the White Hand. Rhuvel-cadlus is only a camp, a stop on the road from Barnavon to Wulf's Cleft to prepare for battle against the Rohirrim. [8]

Face Paint and clan identifiers

The Uch-lûth tend to wear deep purple face paint, the most common design being an ox with the horns across the forehead and snout down over nose, cheeks and chin. On a woman the snout is more slender and the horns curve down over the cheeks. Banners portray a stylized ox with horns and snout.
