A Smial is a Hobbit home tunneled into a hillside. Also known as a "Hobbit Hole", the primitive versions were merely burrows, sometimes windowless. But for the more well-to-do Hobbits, they were extensive, luxurious, and very comfortable. The biggest Smials could house dozens to hundreds of Hobbits, usually related to one another by blood or marriage.

Hobbit populations outside of the Shire also tend to construct smials or burrows where the landscape permits. Such dwellings can be spotted in Bree-land, in Clegur and Glyn Helygin the Stoor-vales, and in Maur Tulhau in Enedwaith, although houses are more common.

Smials of note include Bag End in Hobbiton, Brandy Hall in Buckland, and the Great Smials of Tuckborough. The far-travelled Bingo Boffin lives in a Smial.
