Description

Felaróf, was the legendary steed of Eorl the Young the young lord of the Éothéod who would go on to become the founder and first ruler of the Kingdom of Rohan. In addition, Felaróf was the forbearer of the Mearas, the greatest breed of horses in Middle-earth, and among his descendants include both Shadowfax and Snowmane.

The majestic white stallion originally dwelled within the Wells of Langflood, and in T.A. 2501 Eorl's father Léod attempted to try and tame the great beast, though was thrown off the horse, the former dying when his head struck a rock. Eorl made it his mission to tame the beast that killed his father. Thus, Eorl hunted down this Mearh, and managing to tame him, bestowed him the name "Felaróf", or "Mansbane". The young lord demanded that Felaróf would give up his freedom as weregild for the death of his sire Léod, and to this, the great horse agreed. Thus, the bond between man and horse was secured.

It was upon Felaróf that Eorl the Young rode with his men to the aid of Gondor in Battle of the Field of Celebrant in T.A. 2510, which would guarantee Eorl the lands of Calenardhon for his future kingdom. And, like his master, Felaróf would be slain in T.A. 2545, in battle with the Easterlings in the Wold, and would be buried with honor in the first of the royal barrows arrayed before Edoras.
