Bestowal dialogue

'Have we met before? You have a familiar face, [non-Dwarf: for a <race>,] but it is hard to say for certain. Now, if you were a spider, I would remember every detail, and count the days until I could clear you from the face of this Middle-earth!

'I believed my days were soon to be over, but I have experienced a resurgence of health and vigour, <name>. I heard that the Land of Mordor was opened and the Dark Lord defeated, and that meant little to me. But when news came to me of a valley in the shadow of the Morgai fence that was crawling with spiders, I had no choice but to take notice!

'I understand that you have business in Lhingris? I do as well, for I must introduce the crawling terrors of the Valley of Webs to the axe of Atli Spider-bane! I will not waste the renewed vigour of my twilight years staying at home. To adventure, <name>! Let us enter Lhingris, either from the fortress of Durthang or the other passes, and we will see what waits for us there.'

Background

Atli Spider-bane, with renewed health and vigour, has heard rumours of a spider-infested valley in Gorgoroth and wishes to see it for himself.

Objective 1

  • Find Atli Spider-bane in northern Lhingris, east of the Durthang entrance

An entrance to Lhingris can be found in Durthang or by passes in Udûn or Dor Amarth.

Atli calls for you to halt and smells the air

Objective 2

  • Talk to Atli Spider-bane in northern Lhingris

Atli Spider-bane is in north-eastern Lhingris, near the pass to Dor Amarth.

Atli Spider-bane: 'Ah! Do you smell that? That is the reek of spider you smell! Every one of the creatures has a different and distinctive odour, and they are all mos foul. When you have fought the terrors for as long as I have, you learn to identify such things.
'We will handle my business first, and then continue on to yours. Let us slay spiders, as many as we can! Then we will find this tower you seek. Cirith Ungol, did you say? We will go there when we have left a trail of dead spiders behind us, and when we come back this way we can tread upon them like a carpet! Ha! Ha! Ha!'

Objective 3

  • Defeat Spiders in Lhingris (0/12)

Spiders can be found throughout Lhingris, to Atli's delight.

Defeated spiders in Lhingris (12/12)

Objective 4

  • Talk to Atli at the approach to Cirith Ungol

Atli Spider-bane is within view of the approach to Cirith Ungol.

Atli Spider-bane: 'There your tower lies. I am sure you have your reasons for wanting to see it, but I will not stick my nose into your matters. I do not need to know why you adventure in Mordor to lend you the aid of my axe, and to speak plainly I am happier not hearing the lengthy details!
'There are many bodies on the ground on the approach, Orcs and spiders both. Spiders tend to be honest concerning whether they are dead or not, but Orcs are more given to play-acting. You may want to ensure they are really dead before you set them at your back.'

Objective 5

  • Examine the approach to Cirith Ungol

Atli thought you should more closely inspect the approach to Cirith Ungol.

Atli was right: the bodies of Orcs and spiders litter the approach to the tower

Objective 6

  • Examine the approach to Cirith Ungol

Atli thought you should more closely inspect the approach to Cirith Ungol, ensuring that the Orcs that lie in death before the tower are truly slain.

ORC CORPSE "You are reasonably certain this Orc is dead now. Chances are very high that he is dead, but the smell is terrible and you aren't inclined to investigate further. But you are fairly certain in your assessment."
Examining dead orc ...
This Orc is not pretending. He is truly slain
ORC CORPSE "This Orc is dead, or very close to it."
This Orc is alive, but he is very near to death

Objective 7

  • Talk to the mortally-wounded Orc while he still lives

One of the Orcs lying on the approach to Cirith Ungol lived still, but he is close to death. What might he tell you of the situation in Lhingris?

Sárnazt: 'If I... If I had not suffered this wound... [non-Elf: you would be dead...<race>! I would make you regret... taunting Sárnazt!] [Elf & High Elf: you would be dead... shining Elf! I would make you regret... taunting Sánazt... with your blasted glow!]'
Sárnazt coughs weekly, and blood bubbles on his lips.
'Wretched spiders! they rarely... bother the Orcs of the Tower... but something changed. They used to take ... one or two of the weakest... but not like this! So many... there were so many!
'When the mountain erupted and the earth shook... many of the tunnels were exposed... and the creatures ... swarmed from their pits!
'Roglarg this he can... keep them out...'
Sárnazt is seized by a long fit of coughing, and when he speaks again it is for the last time.
'No one knows... what happened to Shelob...'
With a final gasp, Sárnazt succumbs to his wounds and can speak no more

Objective 8

  • Talk to Atli at the approach to Cirith Ungol

Atli Spider-bane is not far from the approach to Cirith Ungol.

Atli Spider-bane: 'Seems like the Orcs and the spiders had an arrangement, but something's happened and they're not getting along so well these days. Ha! Serves 'em both right, don't it? That's what happens when you try to make nice with a spider. Can't keep watch on all those eyes and all those legs at once, can you?
'It sounds as if this Shelob must have been the one keeping these spiders under control. I guess it falls to me and my axe to do the job now!'
