Description

Eorl the Young, son of Léod, was the Lord of the Éothéod and the first King of Rohan.

When his father died while trying to tame one of the mearas, Eorl vowed to avenge him. Initially intending to slay the mearh, his anger cooled when he witnessed the beauty of the steed. Eorl had treated the mearh as a friend and it had met him in kind. He became the first lord of the Éothéod to tame one of the mearas. His mearh was named Felaróf.

In 2510, Eorl was asked by Cirion, Steward of Gondor, for aid in the war against the Balchotch Easterlings. Eorl gathered a mounted army from the Éothéod, and rose forth against the Easterlings, and together with Gondor, drove them back to Rhûn.

In gratitude for Eorl's actions, he granted the depopulated realm of Calenardhon to the Éothéod, and they then took to calling themselves Eorlingas, or "Eorl's People".

The neighbouring Silvan Elves called the Eorlingas the Rohirrim, the "Horse-lords", and their new land became known as Rohan, with Eorl as its first King.
