Soloing in Middle Earth

LOTRO is a game designed to offer a variety of play experiences, and soloing is very viable for all of the Classes. It is not necessary to choose a particular class to solo effectively, although some classes are more enjoyable to solo with than others.

Hunters and Lore-masters have the advantages of high damage output plus ranged damage capabiltiy. Guardians offer very high survivability as an unsupported character. Captains have the ability to perform as a Hybrid Tank with a pet, and have a wide variety of skills to apply while soloing. Minstrels have excellent healing and buffing abilities that they can use to increase their solo capability. Champions have high damage output, but suffer from minimal damange mitigation and are one of the weaker soloing classes while leveling up. However, a level 50 Champion can solo very effectively with the use of legendary ability Controlled Burn and weapons such as the Great Axe of Daring.

The Quest journal lists all the quests the character currently has active. Quests which are recommended for a Fellowship have a Fellowship Icon in the quest journal - these quests are generally more difficult and not recommended for solo play unless the character is significantly higher level than the quest. Quests which do not have the Fellowship Icon can be assumed to be completable solo by any class of equivalent level or even one or two levels below the level of the quest.

There are sufficient solo quests to advance without the forced grouping that many solo players object to, at least up to level 32 or so. Turbine is planning more solo content to make soloing all the way to level 50 more viable. In general, advancement as a solo player is a bit slower than with a good Fellowship but soloing offers much greater flexibility, especially for casual players without longer blocks of play time.

The most recent update, book 13 added a whole region focused on soloing: All quests in Forochel (with some few exceptions) can be soloed by a character on the same level as the quest is. The quest are level 44 to 50, thus offering mid-40 players a way to level up to 50 on their own.
