This is a very difficult quest, so come prepared with a full fellowship. Clear through the first areas, which are filled with numerous pulls of elite wights. You will come across one or two chests. Activate either and a passage will open, with a "strange voice" beckoning you. Head down the passage and you will encounter a Nemesis Gaunt-lord with approximately 46,000 morale, guarding a chest that contains Laerdan's breastplate. As he reaches 45k, 30k and 15k morale, he will summon four elite wights to aid him. Focus on taking down the wights when they spawn, but also keep some steady damage on the Gaunt-lord, since he sometimes heals himself (not interruptable) by draining the morale of his allies. If his morale rises back above one of the summoning points and then drops below it again, he will summon more adds, so it is imperative that he does not manage to do so. DO not pull him out of the room either, or he will reset.
