Lore
The cruel and ancient spires of the Misty Mountains have, since dawn of time, divided fields of Eriador from the ancient forests and wilderness of Rhovanion.
The legendary birthplace of Durin the Deathless, the First Father of the Dwarves, only that hardy people have ever been able to tame the Mountains and bend them to their will. Today, the Dwarves are gone, driven from their ancestral halls by teeming hordes of Orcs and other more ancient and mysterious evils. The dark caverns and high passes of the Misty Mountains are given over almost entirely to the creatures of the Dark Lord Sauron.
Ancient and gigantic, the towering peaks of the Misty Mountains (in Sindarin, Hithaeglir) run from Carn Dûm, the capital fortress of Angmar in the north, to Isengard, seat of Saruman the Many-coloured in the south. These hulking giants, separated by only rare mountain passes, divide the lands of Eriador and Rhovanion. With these peaks and valleys plagued with cruel weather and stalked by enormous beasts, the fate of Middle-earth has been changed more than once when Wizards, pilgrims, and kings have attempted to cross the Misty Mountains — and failed.
Strange creatures dwell in the chill and fog of the Misty Mountains, where relics from older times linger in ice and snow. Yet amid these mountains, giants, and mammoths, even the smallest folk may change the fate of Middle-earth.
The range’s history is as long and foggy as the mountain chain itself. Much of its lore is lost or forgotten, and even more is shrouded in the mists of legend. What is certain is that these steadfast peaks stood as an ancient witness to the epics, ancient and new, of both Eriador in the west and Rhovanion in the east. The first of the Seven Fathers of the Dwarves, Durin the Deathless, wandered these mountains in the early days of the earliest age of Middle-earth. His descendants delved mines and built halls throughout the range for thousands of years, and your own tale brings you here now.
The Misty Mountains region accessible from Rivendell is best known for the High Pass, one of the northernmost passages across the range. Long have travelers attempted to cross the mountains here, and long have predators gathered to prey on such travelers. No passage through these mountains is ever certain. The way to Rhovanion is now impassable here, as it has been at times past. What remains is a network of valleys and narrow mountain passes fraught with danger and freezing cold.
The reaches of the Misty Mountains that lie in the region above Rivendell are a small part of the larger range, but they teem with stories to discover and challenges to overcome. They offer a glimpse of the mountains’ past, still smoldering amidst the snow, hot with ancient grudges rekindled alongside new threats. Some reaches of the region appear the same now as they did in ages past, inhabited by simple giants and wild beasts, but other parts of the mountain — especially those once touched by the Dwarves — are more storied.[1][2]
The Misty Mountains lay east of Rivendell and run north and south. The area is geared toward players of levels 35-50.
