Help talk:Contents
From Lotro-Wiki.com
Ok I though the help template (curly brackets are templates right?) was supposed to be used to ask for contributer help in making things less buggy and more wiki like? Did something take its place? I just want to be able to tag some stuff to have wiser heads than mine to look and something and suggest improvements to my posts.--YuriPup 06:08, 5 April 2007 (PDT)
- We have very few templates at the moment, and adding more as we go, some of them including {{help}} are being changed, so may not function any more as they used to... --Xander 06:28, 5 April 2007 (PDT)

Capitalization
I'm getting confused here ... I started out entering items as specified in the Guidelines - all lower case except the first letter unless proper names. Later I read a comment saying some items should be moved to versions with caps because the game capitalizes, but I can't recall where that comment was. Entering quests the last couple of days I've borne that in mind and entered quests with capitalization as in-game, forgetting the Guidelines. Checking the list of quests I discover some already entered as per Guidelines ... so which do we go for? All lower case, or caps when the game does? Or do we just redirect from one version to another? DancesInTrees 10:09, 15 April 2007 (PDT)
- The nature of a wiki and capitalization makes it difficult to decide, but when in doubt always match the case in the game. Other topics that can be mixed case like the example for fire resistance, should be lower case or at a minimum have a page to redirect the lower case to the upper case page. Names of NPCs, Items, Skill, Traits and Quests should all be considered as a proper name. --Lotroadmin 14:05, 15 April 2007 (PDT)
spelling
We might want to add a spelling guide i.e. Breeland should be Bree-land, Jeweler should be Jeweller (both are correct spelling but the uses two "l"s) --Hinney 23:41, 9 May 2007 (PDT)
Non player characters
I suggest a template should be developed for non-player characters. Synique 05:48, 29 June 2007 (PDT)
I wanteed to add my voice to this. Also, do we have lists of what NPCs are in which outpost, or lists of all the Two-Handed Weaponsmiths (for example) and their locations? I was unable to find this by searching. Adelas 09:12, 16 February 2008 (PST)
- Before we can make lists like that, I think we'd actually need a page for each of those weaponsmiths... which would mean we'd have all that after we've entered every NPC currently found in-game, or at least close to it. That's a huge but quite possible project, and I've been working through Thorin's Hall for a start. This will be the NPCs project... which will be listed "Very Soon", I promise. --Fedaykin 09:40, 16 February 2008 (PST)
code of getting Image name only
HI all, I just need a bit of help. I been trying to work out a way to get a Item Image from other template but no go as all I get is a full display of the item info. If any one know how to command (Code) is will help. I just need to get the Image name only. Thank you --Speico 14:34, 29 June 2007 (PDT)
Templates
I combined the lotro-wiki guidelines section and the adding pages section, because information was duplicated between the two sections. I also expanded the section talking about categories and moved it to the end (since you previously had to scroll past it to get to the more frequently-used Adding Pages and Templates sections) Speaking of templates.....
- Is there a reason for the Drop Cap template being included on this page? What is this used for?
- In what cases are we using the Vitals and Drops templates?
- We have a Creature infobox template and a Mob infobox template. Is there a guideline for when one should be used over the other? I sort of had the idea that the Mob infobox should be used for named bosses only (ie Signature, Elite Master, Nemesis, Arch-Nemesis), but I have seen it used for plain old regular mobs recently.

Giving Help an Update
There's great potential here! As a new member to LOTRO-Wiki and in general to editing wiki's I thought I would give a bit of input on what I think this area should have. Simply put, I have MANY questions and what better way to update help than by answering LOTS of questions!
Q: How do I do simple code in wiki? In other words, how do I bold, italicize, underline, indent, list, fonts, colors, etc.. It's often the simple things we take for granted and forget about.
Q: What are some general guidelines as far as grammar/punctuation/spelling/plural vs singular/etc?
Q: Explain how categories/sub-categories/sub-subcategories etc. work? How do I create a sub-category?
Q: How do I sign my comments in talk?
Q: What are stubs? How do they work?
Q: What are redirect and double redirect links? How do I fix those if I spot one?
Q: What are your standards for images? Are there different standards for different types of images? Icons vs Character portraits/screenshots? Maps?
Q: Are there Templates? Where are they?
Q: How do I create a page? Edit a page? Move a page?
Q: Are there regulations about where I get my information from?
Q: How do I insert a picture where I want it? Upload pictures?
These are but a few questions I had when I first started looking at helping with wiki's. If we answer some or all of these I think it might be a big help to others. These are generally for the casual visitor or the beginner wiki user, which we could set up the Help in stages... Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced, Admin (if needed for new admins).
I am sure that most of you, given some thought, could come up with more and more questions. As we collect them we can see what needs categorized, if at all. Generally if you see the information before putting them in order, the order will come to you. Rogue 14:42, 14 February 2008 (PST)
PS: Reading back through the help page answered (or possibly could if I read it :P) some or most of my questions, but like most people I didnt see (read) the matterial presented. Let's fix it so people will read the wonderful information that is already there! Rogue 14:45, 14 February 2008 (PST)
