Guide to Metalsmithing

Ore needed per level
So how much ore does a Metalsmith need to become a Master Grandmaster? It's a large amount...
The table below described the ore necessary to skill up by only crafting chain links or metal plates. The following assumes no critical success in smelting or refining, which might reduce the amount of ore needed a bit.
Master Tier 1 = 600 points = 450 Copper Ore + 150 Tin Ore
Master Tier 2 = 840 points = 840 Barrow Iron Ore
Master Tier 3 = 1080 points = 1080 Rich Iron Ore
Master Tier 4 = 1320 points = 3300 Dwarf Iron Ore
Master Tier 5 = 1560 points = 780 Ancient Iron Ore + 4680 Dwarf Iron Ore
Total sum: 11280 pieces of ore.
The large jump between Tier 3 and Tier 4 is due to a major change in recipe. Up through Tier 3, to advance 4 points of skill requires 2 metal ingots. In Tier 4, the cheapest method to advance 4 points requires 3 iron bars plus a steel bar which itself requires 2 iron bars. So at Tier 4, 10 ore is required to advance 4 points. Similar rules apply at Tier 5.
If all of the ore were smelted and refined by a Master Prospector of the tier in question, the amount of ore is reduced by about 15% due to critical successes.
